What Are the Best 2 Person Tents for Every Type of Camping Situation

The best 2 person tents provide comfort, safety, enjoyment, versatility, and keep you dry throughout the night.

There are a ton of options out there, so to make your life easier we have compared and compiled a list of the best 2 person tents in the market. Here you will find options for all types of camping situations from budget-friendly, to extreme weather conditions and ultralight tents that are suitable for backpackers.

How to pick the best 2 person tent that is perfect for you?

Tents come in all shapes, sizes, and are designed for different seasons, functions and styles of travelling. So, when you are researching what are the best 2 person tents, it is best to start with some questions to help you make the right choice.

Do you want a tent for 3 seasons (spring to autumn) or winter as well?

Will you be carrying your tent for solo camping or sharing the weight with someone?

Do you want something affordable or to invest in a top-quality tent?

Is it for a specific function or do you want something versatile?

Do you want to use the tent just for sleeping or need extra space for storage on longer trips? How about standing room inside the tent?

Will you be camping above the tree line in the mountains or under extreme weather conditions?

Important Note- When camping in the wild, in harsh weather conditions or higher altitudes, safety is the top priority. Always be prepared and let someone know where you are going. Investing in a better quality tent, if possible, will always be best.

Best Budget 2 Person Tents

REI Co-op Passage 2 Tent with Footprint ($159)

REI offers some of the best entry-level and affordable options for campers and backpackers looking to get out there and take their first steps in the world of camping. The REI Co-op Passage 2 tent with Footprint comes in at only $159, and we love the double doors and 2 vestibules providing extra space under the fly for storage on each side. It is also very easy to set up and performs admirably in heavy rain and strong wind conditions. While not the most spacious or modern design, this is a classic choice, especially if you only go camping occasionally. With a reasonable weight of 5 pounds 10 ounces, it is also a great backpacking option.

REI Co-op Half Dome 2 Plus ($229)

Another serious contender from REI that is still budget-friendly is the Co-op Half Dome 2 Plus. For $229 you get a roomier interior than the Co-op Passage 2 that is best if you are on the taller side, a quick and easy to pitch system, and a 70-denier durable floor tent as well as upper side mesh panels for nights of stargazing. As with the REI Co-op Passage 2, this tent is not the most lightweight option for solo backpackers and can be a bit bulkier when packed. But that is not an issue if you are splitting the weight amongst two people. Overall, this is one of the most recommended 2 person tents for entry-level hikers on a budget.

Best Ultralight 2 Person Tents

ZPacks Duplex Ultralight ($599)

The ZPacks Duplex is a cult favourite amongst hikers looking for the lightest possible 2 person tent to support long-distance hikes in soaring heights. The DFC material is responsible for keeping this tent ridiculously light (just over 1 pound), naturally waterproof and it also keeps it from sagging when wet. This model uses trekking poles for support and to save space but it is best to practise setting up ahead of time, as there is a learning curve to keeping it taut.

NEMO Hornet 2 ($370)

The NEMO Hornet 2 is great if you are camping in tight spots and are quite comfortable with your plus one, as the interior is more compact when including 2 people plus gear. What you get in return is an easy setup with a single-hub pole system, two entry doors, large vestibules and interior pockets. The 20-denier canopy fabric and 15 denier floor fabric makes this a bit more delicate and is best used with a footprint. As with most lightweight tents, the materials need to be treated with extra care. If you want to save on weight and don’t want to splurge on the ZPacks Duplex, the NEMO Hornet 2 is an excellent and well-balanced choice.

Best 2 Person Tents For Harsh Weather

Hilleberg Nallo 2 ($1080)

Hilleberg has been a go-to quality choice for harsh weather conditions in the world of camping for the last 45 years. The Hilleberg Nallo 2 strikes a good balance between durability, four-season versatility and remains relatively lightweight. At $1080 the Nallo 2 is a considerable investment, but it still manages to fall under the $1500+ mark of similar snow and harsh weather models. With its tunnel-like shape, strong Kerlon 1200 outer fabric and 9 mm poles, you will sleep comfortably knowing harsh winds and cold temperatures cannot touch you.

Marmot Thor 2P ($699)

The Marmot Thor 2P is a more affordable four-season option, ideal for alpine camping and cold winter adventures. It offers a much roomier 38 square feet space, that is perfect for 2 people, plus the extra gear during the cold season. It also comes with two doors and two vestibules and ample pocket storage. This tent is built for heavy-duty mountaineering in challenging weather conditions and base camping. With all this extra space and its relatively affordable price tag considering the specifications, the one downside is the heavier load at a hefty 10 pound 7 ounces.

Best Overall 2 Person Tents

Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 Tent ($450)

When you are looking for a perfect combination of durability, price, space and quality, the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 might be just for you. It combines ultralight material with strength and durability and there is also ample space at a respectable 29 square feet. The updated 2020 model includes an intuitive colour coding system to make set up a breeze, especially for beginners. This model is a favourite for those looking for a versatile tent, that is great for long-distance hikes, alpine treks and everything else in between.

MSR Hubba Hubba NX 2 ($450)

The popularity of the MSR Hubba Hubba NX line cannot be overstated. While not the lightest, cheapest or roomiest of the 2 person tents in the market, it manages to strike the right balance and create the perfect home away from home for backpackers and hikers. The NX 2 model comes with two large side vestibules and a pole configuration that creates plenty of space on the inside with extra headroom. Similar to the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2, it comes with 29 square feet of space but is 9 ounces heavier.
